Bring in Spring at these Vibrant Shows

Winter snows are melting,birds are singing and trees are budding. The travel experts at The GO Group say there’s no betterway to welcome spring than by attending one of these urban flower and garden shows sprouting up in many cities across the country:

The New York Botanical Gardens (NYBG), celebrating its 125th year, is offering a variety of events across its 250 acres. Orchid aficionados won’t want to miss the The Orchid Show: Orchidelirium, hosted from mid-February until April 17 at the Enid A.Haupt Conservatory; add wine and live music on weekends in March and April during Orchid Evenings. Other upcoming programs include the Daffodil and Wine weekend on April 23 and 24 and the Antique Garden Furniture Fair on April 29 – May 1. The NYBG offers many guided tours, events and workshops year-long; check the website, www.nybg.org, for dates, times and ticket prices.

Just steps away from Chicago’s Lincoln Park Zoo is the Lincoln Park Conservatory which showcases exotic plants and grows the thousands of plants needed for the parks within its four display houses. Its annual Spring Flower Show is on from mid-spring until Mother’s Day, Sunday May 8th. View stunning presentations of tulips,daffodils, hydrangeas, orchids, ferns and flowering shrubs. Admission is free.

Everything is bigger in Texas and the same rings true for Dallas Blooms: Artistry in Nature, running until April 10 at the Dallas Arboretum. With more than 100 varieties of spring bulbs totaling 500,000 blooms of tulips, hyacinths, daffodils and 3,000 azaleas, it is the largest floral festival in the Southwest. This year’s show features sculptor Gary Lee Price’s Great Contributors Bronze Statues throughout the garden. Gardening tips and information can be found at the arboretum’s Trial Gardens.

San Diego is host to the Coronado Flower Show,held April 16 and 17 in Spreckels Park in the center of Coronado’s Village. It is the largest tented flower show in the nation with exhibits, entertainment and trophy presentations presented by Community Landscapes for community, commercial and home gardens.
