The Museo Maya de Cancún is the most important museum that has been developed by the National Institute of Anthropology and History since the construction of the National Museum of Anthropology (1964) and the Museo del Templo Mayor (1987). It shelters one of the most significant archaeological collections of the Mayan culture of the country, therefore not only the most important pieces of the State of Quintana Roo, but a selection of emblematic pieces from the sites of Palenque, Chichén Itzá, and Comalcalco, among others.
During each spring and fall equinox in Chichén Itzá, the great pyramid of Kukulcán visually represents day and night as the sun, serpent-like, slithers down its staircase and reveals the pattern play of time upon its ancient ruins. In celebration of Mayan achievements in astronomy and the culture’s fixation on time and its passing, people gather at the pyramid twice a year out of respect and admiration for the dew-drenched Mayan pyramid in all its history and glory.
Located to the northwest of Cancun, Mexico, Holbox Island is a small, quiet island which gives sanctuary to thousands of flamingos, pelicans and other exotic birds and creatures. Very few outsiders visit this island!
