Spring has ‘sprunging’ up all across the country. Where are the best places for you to enjoy it? GO Airport Shuttle has a few tempting ideas. Whether it’s price, weather, or special activities, read on, then pack your bags.
With winter behind us, Spring colors, warmer weather, outdoor activities could be just what you need. The next month or so could also represent the ‘shoulder’ season for many popular travel destinations, so the deals might be very enticing. Here are a few places to think about.
There’s so much to do in D.C., you could spend a whole week there. Heck, even King Charles and Camilla made a visit to our nation’s capital this Spring. One big draw would have to be the cherry blossoms. Originally a gift from our friends in Japan, Spring is its shining hour, not to be missed, if you’re anywhere in the area. You could spend all morning enjoying the many blossom views, not just around the Tidal Basin, but all over town. Check out Dumbarton Oaks, as well as the Mall itself. There’s also the National Arboretum, which offers a vast display of color and fragrance.

Spring is a great time to visit New York City. One nearby spot that’s a great place to experience is Eastern Long Island. The water might not be warm enough for swimming, but the beaches will be lonely, and the walking will give you lots of time to take in the ocean views and spend time just thinking. That’s a novel idea! There are also several wineries and farmers markets just getting going for the year. You can use Montauk as your base. Check out the Lighthouse, the oldest in New York. You could also retrace the action from The Great Gatsby. For a list of current activities, you’ll find a thorough current listing here.
Go West
Denver really shines during the month of May. Most of the foliage is freshly green (before the dry summer heat turns things brown) and you can still see those majestic, snow-capped mountains off in the distance.
One hour south of the city sits the Garden of the Gods, a rock formation near Colorado Springs, that can help take your mind off any Winter concerns you might have. There’s also the U.S. Air Force Academy, U.S. Olympic Training Center and Pike’s Peak to check out.
Go Southwest, y’all
Now would also be a good time to get a taste of Texas. It’s a tough call between the big cities of Dallas and Houston. Each one offers a range of activities, events and diverse tastes to keep you busy. You’ll beat the World Cup crowds in Houston during May, and the food possibilities are nearly endless, with Viet-Cajun or Indian-Portugese combinations, alongside Southern comfort and BBQ. Don’t forget the Johnson Space Center either. After the recent Artemis lunar adventure, space is back in vogue.
When it comes to Dallas, you’ll never run out of things to do. The area is filled with unique and special museums, all FREE. Art lovers will enjoy the Dallas Museum of Art. There’s also a museum for Latino art as well as the only African-American oriented museum of its kind in the Southwest. And don’t miss the many outdoor parks and reserves all around town for some more free entertainment.
Go really far West
May is right in the shoulder season for Maui. You’ll beat the summer crowds, have the surf to yourself and catch the tail end of the whale migration off the coast. Maui’s back in gear after the terrible fire a few years ago, and tourists are very welcome. The Road to Hana awaits, with all its curves, bends and waterfalls. And for the early riser, you can’t beat sunrise from atop the inactive Mt. Haleakala volcano. You can nap on the bus ride on the way up.
Back to Earth in the Midwest
They say you can experience all four seasons during Spring in Chicago. But the Windy City really excels when the leaves start coming out and clear skies overlook the skyline. Perhaps the best view of it all is a ride on the giant Carousel on Navy Pier. Slow-moving and gentle, so you’ll be able to grab some great pics of the entire shoreline. The boat rides (cruise ships plus jet-speed boats) are in full gear leaving from the Pier. But, not to missed would be the Chicago Architecture Boat Tour that goes up and down the river snaking through the downtown area. You’ll be learning and laughing the entire trip.
This should round out your Spring travel plans. As an alternative: We don’t know if this is still possible, but a friend of ours used to head out to the airport at the start of his spring break and ask a airline ticket agent for the next flight out of town to a warm, beachy spot, then pay in cash and take off. Pretty gutsy. Short of that, you can always check out sources for some of the best last-minute deals going from Websites like The Travel Zoo or even one of the airlines themselves, like American. And if you’re trying to use up your frequent flier miles, check out The Points Guy.
